The Cookie Lab

About a week before the lab tell students that they are to bring in a batch of cookies- enough so that each student gets one. Do not tell them what the cookies are for. They are to try to get unique types so that there are minimal repeats. Cookies can be store bought or home-made. If a few students cannot bring in cookies that’s ok, there will still be plenty to go around and the activity still works.

Rules for the lab:

  • Classify each cookie as Igneous, Sedimentary or Metamorphic
  • Have a reason for each classification
  • Many cookies can have different classifications
  • There are no wrong classifications- only wrong reasons
  • Do not insult any cookie (and therefore the person who brought it)
  • Quietly throw out any “undesirable” cookie
  • Be careful with allergens Students are to bring in the package or know the ingredients so that students can check allergans.
  • Not eating today? Take ‘em home.

Bubbles

Sedimentary

Using the clean paper as a writing surface, students make their own organizational chart for the classification.
